What about the Millennials?

Hello People!

Happy Friday! Today, I want to post a video about those that were born before the year 2000. Life sure was different when I was growing up. The things we used to do really helped us to build a sense of community, and level of independence. However, now I feel that the things we once enjoyed, to some extent, I feel that the millennials are missing out on the things we’ve all once had if you were born before the year 2000. With the advancement of technology, and as the world turns, it seems as though that although we do have innovation, the millennials are missing the basics in order to survive this world. Some millennials have unrealistic expectations when they go searching for a job after graduation.

My sister who works for a Fortune 500 company that I also once used to work for told me how some of the kids fresh out of University or College have unrealistic expectations when going for a job interview. They have book smarts but lack emotional intelligence and practical experience that would qualify them for some of the positions they seek in the business world. I too have witnessed the unrealistic expectations of millennials seeking to enter the job-force with only book smarts and no sense of emotional intelligence, or those having unrealistic expectations to advance quickly to places of high promotion without working really hard for it. They do get the shock culture of their lives when they experience the reality of their unrealistic expectations. Book smarts are not enough in the business world without relationship smarts. And considering that many people holding management positions are from the older generations who prize these particular elements when they seek to hire an individual, it is important that the millennials learn from their parents or older people who have a history of being successful and seek to be mentored by such individuals if they seek to thrive. Having unrealistic expectations won’t change the outcome if they don’t learn to change their mindset.

When I think of the millennials situation, I am reminded of this piece of scripture:

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I think that it’s important for them to realize that they need to renew their mindset in order to prove what is good, and acceptable, and the perfect will of God for their lives by God’s standards when they come to understand that their current unrealistic expectations does not eliminate the need to be humble, teachable, contrite and wise. These character traits that are Biblical to begin with, are what employers seek from their candidates. Pride and arrogance won’t get them anywhere in this life if they refuse to humble themselves before their predecessors, and that is why learning from the success of the previous generation is key in order to be successful in the present time.

I feel like my Generation is at an advantage because of the things we’ve had to go through and learn by learning from the earlier generations (refer back to this scripture posted above 1 Peter 5:5). We’ve been taught to learn from the past…but I feel that the new generation just wants to pursue the future without recognizing or learning from the previous generation. Some come off as stuck up and incorrigible, but those that are humble and are willing to listen and learn from the previous generation, benefit from such wisdom as they run their race. So my prayer is that we pray for the millennials to learn from the previous generation so that they can grow in wisdom and stature as they pursue purpose in their lives.
