Healing for the Backslider

Isaiah 57: 14-21

Healing for the Backslider

14 And one shall say,
“Heap it up! Heap it up!
Prepare the way,
Take the stumbling block out of the way of My people.”

15 For thus says the High and Lofty One
Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
With him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
To revive the spirit of the humble,
And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
16 For I will not contend forever,
Nor will I always be angry;
For the spirit would fail before Me,
And the souls which I have made.
17 For the iniquity of his covetousness
I was angry and struck him;
I hid and was angry,
And he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him;
I will also lead him,
And restore comforts to him
And to his mourners.

19 “I create the fruit of the lips:
Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,”
Says the Lord,
“And I will heal him.”
20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea,
When it cannot rest,
Whose waters cast up mire and dirt.

21 There is no peace,”
Says my God, “for the wicked.”

Today’s meditation comes with a Word of Encouragement for the Backslider”. In this walk, people must understand that life has a way of causing people to falter in their Faith. It doesn’t matter how Christian you think you are, you are not immune to Temptation and Adversity that life has to offer just because you believe in our Lord, Jesus Christ. Think of Simon Peter who denied having an association with Jesus after Jesus was arrested. Our Lord knew Peter’s weaknesses and even exposed that weakness before the event was to occur by prophetically revealing it to Peter by Word of Knowledge that he was going to deny Him 3 times.

Matthew 26:34
Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

This Word of Knowledge that came from Jesus was spoken so that Peter could understand that even as a follower of Christ, it didn’t mean that he would not be tested and that his weaknesses would not be exposed. When the prophetic Word of Knowledge of the event occurred, Peter was in serious distraught over His actions. He wept bitterly over the fact that what Jesus had said to Him had come true.

Matthew 26:75
And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

We all have weaknesses and when the attacks come. It is not as if we are immune to them just because we are believers. One thing Peter should have remembered in all this was that Jesus had already interceded on his behalf for him to overcome the grief that he would feel upon this prophecy coming true in Luke 22.

Luke 22: 31-32

31 And the Lord said,[c] “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

Jesus knew what was yet to come and still with the love in His heart, had already interceded knowing the Peter would succumb to His weaknesses. He even instructs him that once Peter has realized the error of his ways, he must go and help others who suffer this level of self-condemnation to strengthen their Faith once again in Christ.  Reading this makes me feel like saying HALLELUJAH! We serve a God that is able to sympathize with our weaknesses, AMEN!

Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

So even when a person backslides, it is not for us to condemn them but to rejoice for when they return back to the Lord like the Prodigal Son. The Father of the Prodigal son received Him with a Ring and a Robe and was treated much like a king (Luke 15:22), and that is what it means to understand our SONSHIP and KINGSHIP in CHRIST. A Ring is usually a symbol of covenant likened to one in a Marriage, so in the case of the prodigal son, it was a symbol of renewed covenant (Haggai 2:23) and a robe is usually symbolic of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10), because the prodigal son came back with a contrite spirit for squandering his inheritance and was Forgiven by his father of all his past. What an amazing love this father has for his own child. We should do like-wise and forgive in the same manner.

The Prodigal Son

Forgiveness Heals and Restores the Contrite back  into their fullness of Joy (Isaiah 57: 15, 18).

God is the Same with us. When we repent, we reclaim our Sonship and redeem ourselves as Joint Heirs with Jesus Christ (Romans 8:17).  Peter was the Rock that would later be called by God to be an Apostle that would build the CHURCH (Matthew 16:18).

Repentance releases us from sin and allows us to operate in the authority we have as Joint Heirs in Christ to be Sons of God, to be HIS people, humble followers and believers in Christ Jesus. Repentance is the key to the release of blessing. Peter was forgiven of his weakness before he committed it and through repentance was able to operate in the fullness of his calling to become a strong Apostle that was called to Build the Church of Jesus  Christ.

Repentance is tied to CALLING.

Sometimes we cap ourselves in self-condemnation mode that we tend to resort to backsliding and give up when we  think we can’t redeem ourselves because of our weaknesses, but God already knows the mistakes you are going to make and is always seeking to redeem us back to His throne-room of grace when we choose to repent of our mistakes and turn away to do better when we know better. The question is,  Are you Willing to change your ways?

 Today, I want you to know that Guilt and Shame is not your Portion, Forgiveness is.

God is saying, “I want you to return to Me, Your Father. I love you. I have a robe and a ring waiting here for you, for you are my Son/Daughter in Whom I am well Pleased. I Forgive always and You are Forgiven. I Am Your God, You are my Child. Return to Me and I will be with you ALWAYS.”

Forgiveness empowers us when we come humbly before the Lord and Repent.

Ask yourself, are there areas that you need to surrender to God for Him to become Lord over your life even in your weakness?

Will you say “I’m sorry….?”

Think on these questions today and Meditate.

  1. So very much encouragement here, dear Sister Sherline! Wonderful how you help us in our Christian journeys! These lines are especially meaningful to me right now:” But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” Jesus is saying this to Simon. He says it to all back-sliders, praise His Holy Name!
